The post site at Aalst offers an unique opportunity to house a bundled range of public services in the city centry. Its scale allows services to be concentrated on one site, while its location provides direct connection to the public transport netwerk of the city and the region.
The significant heritage of the site was the main part of Filature du Canal, a former cotton mill located in the centre of Aalst. The transfer of significance from factory to administrative centre is fascinating. The city council has expressed the wish to see the unique identity of Aalst reflected in its heritage, an ambition that can be realised in a multi-layered way.
The ambition to link sustainability to a contemporary working environment is seen as the basis of the design. Essential is that in addition to creating comfortable offices, all attention is paid to a spatial translation of a customer oriented welcome. Accessibility, transparency and orientation are the main aspects of this.
The aim is to give expression to a site scaled to its citizens and the identity of the city.
