The existing 1968 building along the river in Ghent will be retained for sustainability reasons. In the process, the entire structure will be preserved and dismantled. This operation involves upgrading the architecture and improving the energy performance to meet the highest standards.
We propose to embed the building, more than now, in a green environment conceived as a large garden. The living quality of the flats will be defined by spacious outdoor spaces carved out of the volume. A new layer will be added. Here we aim to alternate terraces with quality green spaces.
The façade is formed by continuous open balustrades with mainly glazed façades behind them, which may or may not recede. This lends the building a lighter aspect than the current building. The length of the façade is divided and modulated by slight staggered balustrades. The turning and staggering of the columns create an alternation of vistas and closedness. This creates a more pleasant visual connection from the houses with the water on the Gordunakaai.
