Whoever says Antwerp, also says the Boerentoren. The image of the tower towering above the sea of houses, as part of the trinity cathedral-boerentoren-policetower, is familiar to everyone. What is less familiar is the basis of the tower.
The ambition to design the block as a single building with façades on Schoenmarkt, Eiermarkt and Beddenstraat is now a century old. The presence of the tower calls for an urban gesture. Now is the chance to finally realise this ambition.
Our story for the Atypical Tower is set in the city of tomorrow: the liveable city, the collective city, the inclusive city, the consensus city.
The Atypical Tower enters into an alliance with the city. It needs the city. From far away, but also from close by. The tower opens up and allows the city to flow into it, first in a broad sense, then up the stairs, up the lifts. From shopping and eating, to working, relaxing, culture and education, to living, being together in a magnificent place and observing the wonder of the city from a distance.
