The former Grand Magasins de la Brourse have lost much of their former grandeur and their potential as an urban beacon.
We restore the grandeur by restoring and extending the facades. The roof becomes a landscape of slightly offset volumes tailored to the underlying rectangular grid.
The old steel structure is preserved and conceived as a large three-dimensional structure that is filled in and hollowed out in the middle to form a spatial atrium. As a programme, we are collaborating with various local partners (Cohabs for cohousing, Silversquare for coworking, ULB for university education, research and student home) to create a place that appeals to the people of Brussels and gives Brussels its own character. The ground floor is like a covered market, open and walk-through.
Flats will be built on the roof levels, there will be room for festivities under the dome, and on the roof the Brussels city farmer Love&Peas will grow vegetables for everyone who is willing to come and pick them.
