Client Province of West Flanders
Surface 3.000 m2
The province finally owns the Provincial Court and wants its presence back on Bruges’ square.
A century ago, city architect Louis Delacencerie built this slightly too imposing building to compete with nearby monuments, including the Belfry. The façade looks centrally over the market but, with its wide central staircase, the front door is not easy to reach. We don’t want to deface Delacencerie’s building so that it doesn’t lose its dignity and becomes a pastiche. We shift the entrée to the large entrance gate. This creates a generous portal and engaging sequence of entry for each. Once inside, we only need to restore the walls and floors to give the rooms back their grandeur and furnish them with fresh contrasting furniture.
