014 Shipyards Baasrode

The former shipyards in Baasrode will be redesigned and used in phases. The development focuses on 4 sub-aspects: museum development, meeting place for Baasrode residents, training and diagnosis centre and infrastructure for water and cycle tourism.

The first phase includes some essential restoration work on the main buildings.
Furthermore, an existing, dilapidated house will be demolished and replaced by a new building.
This new building is conceived as a ‘hollowed-out’ house. A central column together with 4 beams to each wall forms the structure of the building. Two diagonally situated voids create a perspective through the volume. The spaces suggest the existence of rooms, but allow a maximum of flexible use. Thus, after completion of the first phase, access to the museum can be through this building. The collection can be displayed in a more optimal way.
The ground floor space allows lectures or meetings for local residents to be held here.

The volume takes up the striking gable end of the demolished house. At street level, the façade is pulled back to widen the very narrow pavement in places and optimise access to the building. The new façades evoke the image of the vanished building, materials and detailing ensure a far-reaching abstraction.
