Proposal for the transformation of the Belgian Pavilion
Surface 270 m2
Phase competition
Date 2008
How to transform the Belgian pavilion in order to create a genuine, authentic spatial experience in situ? Because of the temporary aspect, we feel the need to realize a transformation in a recyclable way. In other words: waste is to be avoided.
We consider the sober characteristics of the Pavilion as a given and do not aspire to alter them. Our interest lies in intensifying the experience of the existing space with its intrinsic qualities, by altering its character through simple intervention. Derived directly from our everyday practice, another consideration is related to the impact of the budget on the design process and its final result. In our proposal the direct relation between architecture and money is made explicit. Money becomes material. Three and a half million red copper coins are distributed over the floor surface. The entrance hall and vestibule remain free while the floors of all other rooms are covered. The value of this floor covering with about 5 layers of coins equals the average cost of a traditional museum floor finish.
The exhibited money fills the space with a warm glow, resulting in a three dimensional impression. Its aspects as material, colour and light reflection are celebrated in an unfamiliar way, while smell, sound and tactility take part in the experience. The tangible presence of money also results in confusion. One can question whether people will feel tempted to remove money. The value of each individual piece however is so reduced that taking a small amount becomes unattractive.
The beauty of the action lies within the ultimate re-usability of it. The money will be re-invested in printed matter, one or more publications, thus realising a continued contribution to Belgian Architecture and its international presence.
